GETTING TO AND FROM THIE AIRPORT IN LEIPZIG
Leipzig has one of the longest aviation histories of any European city. Altenburg airport in Nobitz, 42 km south of the city, was an early airship base and later airfield, established by the Duke of Sachsen-Altenburg who was an enthusiastic supporter of aviation. A military air facility was established during World War I, dismantled after the war, reopened by the Luftwaffe for advanced training and subsequently maintained by the Soviet Air Force until just before the reunification of Germany. The airport was a regional civilian facility from 1992 to 2011, and is today an aviation museum.
